Electrical contractor insurance in Indiana
Electrician Insurance Group provides electrician and electrical contractor insurance in Indiana, quoting general liability, workers' comp, bonds and commercial auto with 12+ A-rated carriers.
Indiana has no state electrical license, so an electrician working Indianapolis, Evansville and South Bend can end up holding three different bonds and meeting three different liability floors. Indianapolis alone wants $500,000 in general liability naming the City-County as additional insured and a $10,000 license bond. Your coverage has to follow the cities on your permit list.

Indiana electrical licensing happens city by city
Indiana doesn't license electricians or electrical contractors at the state level. Indianapolis's own licensing office says so plainly and leaves licensing to each municipality. The state's role is the code: the Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission adopts building and electrical codes statewide in 675 IAC, and local departments permit and inspect against them.
So the license, insurance and bond you need depend on where the job is. Here's how three of the state's licensing offices handle it.
Indianapolis and Marion County
The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (BNS), with the Board of Electrical Examiners, licenses electrical contractors across the Consolidated City. Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport sit outside it. Each business needs at least one examined electrical license holder, and that person can be tied to only one partnership, LLC or corporation. Licenses run through December 31 of odd-numbered years.
The insurance filing is specific:
- General liability of $500,000 per occurrence, either as a combined single limit or as $500,000 bodily injury plus $100,000 property damage
- A certificate, not a declarations page, naming the Consolidated City of Indianapolis and Marion County (or BNS) as certificate holder and as additional insured, with no contract-required wording
- "Electrical Contractor" as the description of operations, with no language limiting it to one job or scope
- 15 days' notice of cancellation, and binders accepted for only 30 days
- A $10,000 license and permit bond running to December 31, 2027; continuous bonds aren't accepted
BNS suggests ISO form CG 20 36 04 13, or an equivalent, for the additional insured status. Five permit agents per company are free; each one after that costs $63.
Evansville and Vanderburgh County
The Evansville–Vanderburgh County Building Commission licenses contractors and tradespeople by exam. A Master's license requires $1,000,000 in general liability and a $25,000 surety bond on the Commission's own form. Proof of comp, or an affidavit that Indiana law doesn't require it, is due within six months of passing the exam, and renewals take three hours of continuing education a year.
South Bend and St. Joseph County
South Bend's Building Department registers contractors for both the city and St. Joseph County, subcontractors included. Electrical registration comes in Class A (general) and Class B (industrial work confined to specific premises) and requires a passing score on the National Master Electrician exam. You post a $5,000 one-year bond naming the City of South Bend/St. Joseph County, and renewals need every continuation certificate with no lapse.
There's no state low-voltage or solar license either. South Bend registers fire alarm contractors separately and uses its own solar and EV charger permit applications.
Indiana workers' comp and the local license checks
Indiana requires every employer covered by its comp law to insure or qualify to self-insure, unless the law exempts them. The state Workers' Compensation Board can demand proof. Miss the 10-day deadline and the Board may charge $100 for each day you're out of compliance, though it waives the fine if proof arrives within 20 days of the notice.
The cities check comp at license time. Indianapolis wants comp for workers employed in Marion County. A sole proprietor, partnership or LLC with no employees can sign a waiver or file a Board exemption clearance. A corporation, even an S-corp, must carry comp covering at least its owner or principal, or show a WCB Exemption Certificate Clearance Waiver. Ohio-based shops covered by Ohio comp need an Indiana Certificate of Compliance (State Form 41321). South Bend wants a notarized comp clearance application and coverage kept in force for the whole registration term.
Hiring an uninsured independent contractor? Get a copy of its file-stamped certificate of exemption first. Plan ahead: that exemption isn't valid until seven business days after the Board's file stamp. Our workers' comp guide for electricians and the Indiana Workers' Compensation Board cover the details.
Indiana electricians' coverage stack
With no state license to anchor it, an Indiana program is built from the strictest city on your permit list. Start with the bonds and certificates those offices demand, then cover the trucks and crew.

Indiana risks worth planning around
A patchwork of filings
Three cities means three bonds, three GL floors and three certificate formats, plus additional insured status for Indianapolis. A missed renewal or a bond that lapses can stop your permits in that city while the others keep running. Track each renewal date the way you track inspections. Shops based across the line in Ohio face one more step, since their Ohio comp needs an Indiana Certificate of Compliance before Indianapolis will license them.
Data centers on the Ohio River
In January 2024, Meta announced an $800 million data center campus of nearly 700,000 square feet at River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, with hundreds of construction jobs. That kind of work comes with wrap-ups, high contract limits and long completed-operations tails.
The one-person corporation surprise
Many solo electricians incorporate and assume comp doesn't apply to them. Indianapolis's packet says a corporation must cover at least its owner or show a Board exemption clearance, and that discovery often comes at license time.
Example scenario: A journeyman forms an S-corp, passes the Indianapolis exam and applies for his contractor license with GL and a bond in hand. The application stalls because he has no comp policy and no exemption clearance, and his first panel upgrade waits until he sorts it out.
Indiana cities we serve
These four cities show the range: three local licensing offices with different paperwork, and one riverfront data-center market where the contract sets the terms.
Indianapolis
BNS licensing covers the Consolidated City but not Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway or Southport. Its $10,000 bond runs to December 31, 2027 and has to be typed. License bonds for electricians
Evansville
A Master's license here means a $1,000,000 GL floor, double the Indianapolis minimum, plus a $25,000 bond. General liability for electricians
South Bend
One registration covers the city and St. Joseph County, with a $5,000 bond that can't lapse between renewals. Class B registrations are limited to industrial work on specific premises. Commercial electrical contractor insurance
Jeffersonville
Meta's River Ridge campus was announced as the company's 18th U.S. data center. Subs on mission-critical builds should expect owner-controlled insurance programs. Wrap-up insurance for electrical contractors
How Indiana's local rules show up in your premium
Each jurisdiction you add can mean another endorsement, another bond premium and a higher base limit. Indianapolis's blanket additional insured requirement and $10,000 bond, Evansville's $1 million floor and South Bend's $5,000 bond each add cost, and the highest floor you work under usually sets your GL limit everywhere.
Here's the move that saves the most hassle: keep one calendar for every bond term and certificate in the state. Indianapolis bonds end on a fixed date and South Bend bonds run year to year, so they won't renew on the same cycle. A blanket additional insured endorsement can typically cover the City-County without reissuing your policy for each permit.
What you pay depends on your payroll and class codes, revenue, loss history, the type of electrical work you do and the limits you pick. For the full list, read our guide to what electrical contractor insurance costs.
