Electrical contractor insurance in Colorado

Electrician Insurance Group provides electrician and electrical contractor insurance in Colorado, quoting general liability, workers' comp, bonds and commercial auto with 12+ A-rated carriers.

Colorado's solar market is getting a new kind of licensee. Under SB25-165, solar companies with a NABCEP-certified installer on staff can register as Photovoltaic Installers and do PV electrical work under 300 kW, and existing companies must register by December 31, 2026. Meanwhile, electrical contractors in Denver and Colorado Springs still answer to local licensing and insurance rules layered on top of the state's.

Colorado electrical registration and the master behind it

The Colorado State Electrical Board, part of the Division of Professions and Occupations (DPO) inside the Department of Regulatory Agencies, licenses electricians and registers electrical contractors under C.R.S. Title 12, Article 115. The state license is for people. The contractor registration is for the business, and it hinges on a master electrician.

Individual licenses

  • Master Electrician
  • Journeyman Electrician: four years of practical experience, two of them commercial or industrial, and 288 hours of training
  • Residential Wireman: one- to four-family dwellings, after two years
  • Registered Apprentice: the contractor must register each apprentice within 30 days of hire

Licenses and contractor registrations all expire on September 30 every three years.

The responsible master

A business can contract for electrical work without its own license only if a licensed master directs and controls all of it (C.R.S. §12-115-116(7)). The master and the owner sign an Acknowledgment of Responsibility, and a master can be the responsible party for one company only. A master working as an independent contractor for someone else's business can't pull permits.

What registration asks you to prove

The state doesn't set a general liability minimum for contractor registration, and we found no state license bond. What it does require is evidence that you comply with Colorado's workers' compensation and unemployment insurance laws.

Photovoltaic Installer registration

SB25-165 took effect August 6, 2025. It lets companies that employ a NABCEP-certified PV installation professional register as Photovoltaic Installers, and on systems under 300 kW the PV electrical work can be supervised by that certified person. Only an electrical contractor or a registered PV installer may do PV electrical work. Companies doing PV work on or before September 1, 2025 must register by December 31, 2026, and the registration ends if the designated agent leaves. State law also counts inverter output circuits and EV charging circuits as electrical work.

Local licensing on top

Denver licenses contractors itself and doesn't reciprocate other counties' or states' licenses, though a Colorado electrical license stands in for its supervisor certificate. Pikes Peak Regional Building Department makes state-licensed electrical contractors register with it and carry $1,000,000/$2,000,000 in GL.

Colorado comp: one employee, and proof at registration

Colorado requires workers' comp from every private employer with even one person working under a contract of hire (C.R.S. §8-40-203). The electrical registration makes it concrete, because you have to show the Board you comply before the registration issues.

Owners get one escape hatch. If you hold 10% or more of a corporation or LLC and you control or manage it, you can opt yourself out in writing. The notice goes to your carrier, or to the Division of Workers' Compensation when no policy exists (C.R.S. §8-41-202). That waiver covers the owner only, never the journeymen and apprentices.

The penalty for skipping comp is steep. The Division can order a business to cease operations. Fines can reach $250 per day on a first offense and run between $250 and $500 per day for repeat violations (C.R.S. §8-43-409). Colorado Springs adds its own comp policy for registered contractors. Our electricians' workers' comp page explains how the premium is built.

Where Colorado electrical shops put their coverage dollars

Colorado's state rules only force one policy, comp. Local departments and your contracts decide the rest, so this list leans on what Front Range permit offices and GCs actually ask for.

General liability

The state sets no minimum, but Pikes Peak wants $1M/$2M covering every type of work your license allows. General liability for electricians

Workers' comp

Proof of compliance is part of contractor registration, starting with the first hire. Workers' comp for electricians

Installation floater

Panels, inverters and wire on wildfire rebuild lots before the owner accepts the work. Installation floater for electricians

Professional liability

For PV design, load calcs and system sizing that a GL policy may exclude. Professional liability for electricians

Commercial auto

Wildfire rebuilds

The Marshall Fire on December 30, 2021 destroyed 1,109 homes in Louisville, Superior and unincorporated Boulder County. By December 1, 2025, the county had issued 931 rebuild permits and 829 certificates of occupancy. Rebuild waves mean many new services and PV systems going in at once, materials stored on open lots, and completed-operations exposure that lasts for years.

A new competitor and partner in solar

PV Installer registration opens small solar electrical work to companies built around NABCEP-certified staff. Electrical contractors will compete with them, sub to them or hire from them. Either way, the contract should say clearly who owns the electrical scope and who carries the completed-operations risk.

Example scenario: A registered PV installer hires an electrical contractor to land a 40 kW commercial array on an existing switchboard. Months later, a heating breaker trips and damages the tenant's equipment. Each company's insurer will look first at the subcontract to decide whose work caused it and who named whom as additional insured.

Apprentice ratios and final inspections

State compliance checks enforce a cap of three apprentices under the direct supervision of one licensed electrician, and the employer answers for apprentice work (C.R.S. §12-115-115). A utility can't energize an installation without final inspection approval, except for up to seven days in an emergency, so a failed inspection holds up closeout and payment.

Colorado markets we insure

Each of these places handles electrical licensing and insurance a little differently, which is why a Colorado policy should be built around where you pull permits.

Denver

Denver Community Planning and Development issues its own contractor licenses and won't reciprocate other jurisdictions'. Your state electrical license replaces the supervisor certificate, the first step toward a Denver license. Budget time for both layers when you expand into the city. Licensing and insuring a new shop

Colorado Springs

Pikes Peak Regional Building Department wants $1,000,000/$2,000,000 GL with itself as certificate holder, a real policy number (a binder lets the obligation lapse) and 10 days' notice before cancellation. It enforces the 2023 NEC. General liability for electricians

Boulder County

Marshall Fire rebuilds in Louisville and Superior had reached 84% of destroyed homes permitted and 75% with certificates of occupancy by December 1, 2025. Residential service and PV work continues across the burn area. Residential electrician insurance

Rural and unincorporated Colorado

Where a town or county has no qualifying building department, the State Electrical Board issues permits and state inspectors must inspect within three working days. Utilities can't connect service without the state's sign-off. Commercial electrical contractor insurance

Colorado electrical insurance costs: local floors and payroll

In Colorado, the biggest jump in liability cost often comes from a building department, not the state. Pikes Peak's $1M/$2M floor is higher than many states' license minimums, and it has to cover both residential and commercial work if your license allows both. A shop that only works in Denver suburbs may face a different number than one pulling permits in El Paso County. Keep your certificate current, too. Pikes Peak says a binder without a policy number lets the insurance obligation lapse, so send the real policy details as soon as they're issued.

Comp starts with the first hire, so payroll growth drives a big share of the bill. Wildfire rebuild work, PV and storage scopes, and any design responsibility also move pricing. What you pay depends on your payroll and class codes, revenue, loss history, the type of electrical work you do and the limits you pick. The electrical contractor insurance cost guide covers each factor.

Frequently asked questions

Does Colorado require insurance to register as an electrical contractor?
The state requires evidence that you comply with workers' comp and unemployment insurance laws. It doesn't set a GL minimum, but local departments like Pikes Peak do.
What insurance does Pikes Peak Regional Building Department require for electricians?
General liability of $1,000,000/$2,000,000 with PPRBD as certificate holder, an actual policy number and a 10-day notice of cancellation endorsement. The policy must cover all the work your license allows.
Do solar companies need to register as Photovoltaic Installers by December 31, 2026?
Companies that did PV work on or before September 1, 2025 and want to keep doing PV electrical work without an electrical contractor registration must register by that date. DPO says applications open in late 2026, so watch the Board's site.
